Now this is a little bit of a deviation from what I normal because it’s not live or promotional music photography…though it does involve music photography.

On March 25th (on suggestion from Christian) I ventured into DC to attend the Photoshop World Expo (which was free that day). After getting a little lost I managed to make it to the convention center on 7th Ave where the Expo was being held. When I navigated my way to the area where the expo was being held I was met with quite a sight. I spied Adobe demoing Lightroom 4 and scurried on down.

See more after the jump!

I did a fair amount of wandering around, bouncing from booth to booth. I found a crowd of people around a model who was lit expertly and decided to join the herd and snap a few photos myself. Portraits are not my thing but I gave it a shot.

After doing a fair amount of wandering I stumbled along a rather unexpected booth. The Lens Bracelets booth. With Adam Elmakias himself standing there. For those of you who don’t follow music photography Adam is one of the more well known music photogs, especially for his work with A Day To Remember. Needless to say I did not expect to run into him here. After chit chatting for a bit I followed him over to the Nik Software booth where his presentation convinced me to actually buy software for once. Seriously, I almost never buy software anymore since I’m all set with Lightroom and I bought that ages ago.

After his presentation I decided to do a little shooting around the Lens Bracelets booth, both for my own practice and to get some shots for Adam. Quite a few people were confused as to what the purpose of them were and once they found out that you just wore them proceeded to walk away. Though for the most part the booth was popular and quite a few people stopped by. Including Nick DiNatale, another music photographer I knew who happened to be in my Boy Scout troop long ago. Check his work out, you won’t be disappointed.

Around 5pm the Expo finished up and I ended up going with Adam and his booth mate (who’s name I forget annoyingly enough) to grab lunch with Nick and his friends. We ended up going to a Five Guys Burgers and Fries (I recommend this) and just ate and hung out there for a while. We ended up parting ways after giving Adam directions to the nearest movie theater (Chinatown, right down the road).

All in all it turned into a pretty solid outing as I got to meet a music photographer I look up to and see an old face from the past. Hopefully I’ll be seeing both Adam and Nick on this years Warped Tour.

It’s no mystery that Transit is one of my favorite bands. I mean I’ve shot them a million times and seen them a million times. Now they’re raising funs for a tour documentary! And they’re not just doing a boring old kickstarter, they’ve started their own fundraiser, except it’s a “Fun-Raiser!”. Check it out here and read a statement from the band below.

We came up with a cool idea… We want to put together a tour documentary to give our fans an inside look at all the insanity that happens on the road and share the experience with all of you.

In order to ramp up the excitement-factor, we decided to basically pimp ourselves out and do a bunch of crazy things – while capturing all the footage. What’s even better is that you can be a part of some of them (see the options below).

We also put together a “Best of Transit Thursday” digital download with 10 of the best Transit Thursday covers (chosen by our fans) which is included in every single price option below. We plan to use the money we raise to help fund the documentary, and also to buy beer. Kidding… but not really.

There’s an option to choose five songs for an upcoming show, I’m thinking of chipping in a hundred bucks for a chance to hear some old Transit songs (like xFTWx five times)

So there have been some rumors floating around the Internet (okay tumblr) lately about an upcoming pop-punk compilation….of Disney songs. I took this with a few (heaping) grains of salt until tonight. Tumblr user Ashley recently posted a song (listen to it below) and some major major hints about some bands that are going to be on the compilation. Hints have been dropped to Transit, La Dispute, Man Overboard and The Story So Far. I will be the first to admit that I love Disney, a lot. No joke. I love Disney, hate on it. I also love pop-punk. This is amazing.

Expect the compilation to be out sometime this Summer and keep an eye on that dudes tumblr (and here). I’ll post updates when I have them.

I’m giving this song Single Of The Week status: Calls Landing covering I Just Can’t Wait To Be King from The Lion King. Check them out here

UPDATE: One of my tumblr followers (follow him here) sent me a list of seven possible songs from various hints that Ashey has dropped, they are below

“A Whole New World” (Aladdin) – Man Overboard,

“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” (Mulan) – Transit,

“I Can Go The Distance” (Hercules) – A Loss for Words,

Ah, finally. My first update all by myself! Aren’t you proud of me? This update unfortunately was pushed (way) back due to some personal priorities, but it is finally here! Sorry, you’ll find me to be a bit over-enthusiastic sometimes.

Enough with that, though. I had the privilege of covering a band I never thought I’d be able to see live, and also to showcase some local talent as well. For your viewing privilege, all is behind the cut…

The venue was quite odd for a rock show. The sign outside read “5 bands for 5 bucks.”

On one half of the building, a bar with patrons mostly 40+ discussed how odd “those strange kids” appeared. The phrase, “When I was a teenager…” was heard more than a few times. However, all seemed to welcome this ‘screaming’ music after a few drinks. The other half of the building, presumably built for wedding receptions, was where “those strange kids” were gathering.

The bands to play that night were Transitions, Lifeblood, Ad Astra, The Composure, and Squid the Whale. The Composure and Squid the Whale were on an almost two-month long tour together, sponsored by Pup Fresh

Transitions, a newly formed local metal act were the first to play.

Next up on the set list were Lifeblood, a once-local Christian metal band that has since branched out.

Ad Astra,[lat. for ‘to the stars’] a local melodic alt band were next to play. They had previously been invited by Squid the Whale to open for them at a show in Detroit.

Finally, one of the two touring bands, The Composure took the front.

The final act was, personally, who I’d been really excited to see. (If you read my tumblr at all, you’d have seen that one of my birthday wishes was for Squid the Whale to do an East Coast tour. I was so happy to have my wish granted.)

The holiday season just wrapped up and for Worcester area band Four Year Strong the holiday season means one thing: their annual holiday show at the Worcester Palladium. Of course this time it was wrapped into the It’s A Gig Life Tour. Joining Four Year Strong on this whimsical holiday adventure were Set Your Goals, Balance and Composure, Transit and Diamond. Needless to say it was one hell of a show. See what I have to say about everything after the jump!

First up was Diamond, an alt rock band straight out of Baltimore and if I remember correctly featuring at least one member of Trapped Under Ice. I had never heard these guys before that night and while I haven’t listened to alt rock in ages (I’m a pop-punk fan now) these guys put on a great performance and the crowd seemed pretty into it. Most likely I’ll be picking up their CD and giving it a listen and I would recommend that you do too.

Diamond

Diamond

Next up was Transit. As you may know Transit is easily one of my favorite bands. I have all their CDs and I know the words to pretty much every single song. I was doing my best to both sing along and take photos at the same time which is rather interesting to do. Anyways, I love Transit and they put on a pretty good performance which is saying a lot coming from me seeing how I’ve seen them about 15 times if memory serves me. That number could vary by 3 or 4 in either direction, all I know is that I’ve seen them many, many times. Transit is always a great band to photograph as Joe Boynton, the lead singer, is very energetic and bounces around the stage and actually jumped a few times which I have never seen him do before. Transit played a mix of old and new songs, including my favorite Transit song For The World. If you aren’t already in to this band you should be.

Transit

Transit

After Transit was Balance and Composure, a band that I love but can’t really nail down a genre too. I’ve never actually seen them live and I was not disappointed with their live performance. Granted I don’t have their newest CD and I should really get on that so that I can actually learn their new songs. Anyways, they put on quite an energetic show. If you haven’t seen them before I would recommend seeing them live, they put a lot of heart into playing their songs and during the instrumental riffs you can really feel the emotion.

Balance and Composure

Balance and Composure

After Balance and Composure was Set Your Goals, a band I’ve only seen once before at Warped Tour two years ago. They usually put on a pretty energetic show, bouncing around and trying to get the crowd to do the same. There were a fair amount of crowd surfers during Set Your Goals (I was not surprised when I was getting bumped around by security catching crowd surfers). They opened up with the always awesome Goonies Never Say Die. I have no actually listened to their new CD so I was glad that they played a bunch of songs off their first two CDs.

Set Your Goals

Set Your Goals

Headlining of course was Four Year Strong. I’ve seen them live a few times, but this is the first time without Josh, their former keyboardist/screamer. Even with the loss of Josh (now in foxfires) and the fact that Dan didn’t have much a voice they still put on a strong show. I am not going to lie, I am not a huge fan of their latest CD but the songs they played off it were done well and were quite catchy. Maybe I’ll give it a more serious listen. They had a different sound without Josh and the keyboard, not necessarily bad, but different. However a couple of songs such as Bada Bing Wit a Pipe and the ever awesome Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die didn’t sound the same without the synths. Dan was having throat issues so members of Set Your Goals helped out with a few of the songs and Mike Adams of A Loss for Words climbed into the crowd to do guest vocals during Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die.

Four Year Strong

Four Year Strong

Overall it was a pretty great show and I got to see a bunch of people I hadn’t seen in a while. You can find all the photos from the show here

Hey Everybody! I know I’ve been kind of remiss in updating my site but that will changing soon! I’ve got a new member of the team and her name is Becki! She saw Handguns in Southern Maryland with a few local bands, her review is below. You’ll be hearing a lot more from her in the coming weeks.

Everything that follows is from Becki herself

At the end of their short December tour with fellow pop-punkers Man Overboard, Handguns so kindly decided to cater to the dreams of a few Southern Maryland kids by playing yet another show…
…in a garage. I’m also fairly sure that the show was arranged about a week or so before it actually was to occur. That gave me a week to mentally prepare to shoot the biggest band I’d ever had the privilege to.

Hit the jump for more!

Arriving late and missing the first band didn’t exactly help my nerves, either. ( Angry teenage punks, Hank! - http://www.facebook.com/pages/HankBand/146953535395869 check em’.)

FLS (NJ pop-punk http://flspoppunk.bandcamp.com/) were setting up when I arrived. FLS live are everything you’d expect from a Jersey pop-punk group; energetic and harmonic with a hint of that Jersey aggression.
